The Woolly Worm Festival:

Another of the whimsical North Carolina Mountain Festivals that takes place near our Western North Carolina Cabins Rentals is Banner Elk’s annual Wooly Worm Festival. Each year, nearly 20,000 people, 140 vendors, and 1,000 worm trainers flock to Banner Elk to participate in this one-of-a-kind local festival. Centering around the furry worms that roam the area in abundance during the autumn, this festival near our Western NC Cabins is a great event for children and adults alike. According to local folklore, the color of the worms was said to predict the severity of the upcoming winter; the worms range in color from black to brown, some solid colored and others with bands or stripes. Having seen several different colored worms, one of the festival’s founders decided he needed to devise a way to figure out which worm should be trusted. Thus, the woolly worm races came about. Worms are “trained” by anyone hoping to enter the contest, and then compete against one another to see which can climb up three feet of nylon string the fastest. The winning worm is said to be a trustworthy predictor of the conditions of the next winter’s weather. Since 1978, this fanciful fall festival has been an integral part of community life in Banner Elk NC, and it is a popular event among visitors to our Western NC Mountain Cabins Rentals.

Autumn at Oz:
